Lasry, who was born in Morocco, grew up in West Hartford, Connecticut with his other sister, Ruth and his parents, Moise and Elise Lasry. He received a B.A. in history from Clark University in 1981 and a J.D. from New York Law School in 1984. Clerked for bankruptcy judge in Southern District of New York. Later became co-director of bankruptcy department at Cowen & Co. With sister Sonia Gardner founded distressed-debt brokerage Amroc Investments 1989. Launched hedge fund Avenue Capital 1995. Sold 15% stake to Morgan Stanley for $275 million 2006. Flagship fund fell 25% in 2008; soared 66% last year. Assets are about $20.1 billion.
